The first group of students had
their classroom in a converted barn. In 1998, three classrooms were built and
some 300 students, ages 6 to 21 lined up for registration. The demand for
school quickly became evident as more and more children showed up. Some children
walked for hours, through rough terrain, to get to school as there were no
roads.
The school became known as Shibu Ejersa
School, in honor of the first settler at Kalala and the great, great grandfather of the Kalala community.
Today, there are about
500 students in kindergarten. There is always a long waiting list for
admission. They are divided into three sections: KG 1, KG 2, and KG 3.
The elementary school has the largest number of students. The classrooms have multiple sections and are designed to accommodate about 2,000 students.
The secondary school has muliple
buildings to accommodate the science building, the computer lab, the library as
well as the podogogy building. The school is very fortunate to have
well-motivated, well-disciplined and highly successful students. So far,
upwards of 99% have been successful in passing College Entrance exams.
Music Education is offered as extacurricular activity for those students who have special interest in music.
